These are just standard user workstations, so it's not super critical to turn back on. how important is it that this machine gets back on the network if someone inadvertently powered it off via the Power Button - if this is the case, then look at getting a networked attached power outlet - yes they make these that you can send a command to that will drop the power, and then another command to turn the power back on. If the Power Button is used whereby it powers off the PC then it's all bets off for WOL, but this is where creative thinking comes in. The "Power On" after AC Power loss is exactly as it reads - when the mains drop and then return the PC Will power itself back up and boot.Īs others have stated the OS via ACPI has to shutdown the PC in order for WOL to work. I tried setting the BIOS to "Last State" and "Power On" after AC power loss, but that didn't help either. Interesting, I guess that would explain it. A hard power-off by power switch will mean machine is not ready to WoL. This sets NIC in state to receive magic packet. Meaning that you may have to hunt around for this stuff as the BIOS is different from computer to computer and the settings are different from NIC to NIC.ĪFAIK in order to WoL a machine it MUST have been soft-powered off by ACPI, ie graceful shutdown. You also have to configure the Network cards 2 WOL settings (yes, 2) to Wake on LAN after you do the bios setting to wake it if the Bios says it is ok. (Worst part is I usuall y do not let it turn off the card as it has a tendency to disconnect from my document management system.) You have to change the power management on the network card to allow the machine to be awakened in addition to configuring the card (S5 is powered off by the button as you state.)
